Ministry to summon Umara over National Song gaffe

Umara Sinhawansa, a well-known singer, would be called to the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry to give a testimony, a Ministry official said. She is accused of singing the national anthem at the opening of the Lanka Premier League competition on Sunday with distortion.

In light of this, the singer will be invited to the Ministry today or tomorrow so that she can record a statement. He claimed that yesterday, a Ministry team was looking into this incidence.

visited Sri Lanka Cricket and spoke with an SLC management and an LPL event organizer about the incident.

He further stated that an investigation is being conducted to see whether a similar situation occurred at the start of earlier LPL tournaments.

The official added that the SLC had entrusted the responsibility of organizing the inauguration ceremony to a Public Relations company.“The SLC had informed the investigators that a Education Ministry Director usually checks whether the national anthem is recited on par with the accepted standards before such event,” the official said.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene in his capacity as the Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister had ordered Ministry Secretary Rajith Ashoka to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations leveled against singer Umara Sinhawansa.

The Ministry investigating team comprises an Additional Secretary and an Assistant Secretary of the Education Ministry.
