Foreign doctors to treat injured tusker

A team of foreign medical experts are scheduled to arrive in the country to provide treatment to the injured tusker popularly known as Agbo now lying in Labunoruwa Tank reservation in Thirappane.

Veterinary Surgeon, Anuradhapura wildlife zone. Dr Chandana Jayasinghe said the tusker has been lying in a critical condition for about three months due to a gunshot injury caused by a trap gun.

He said the Wildlife Conservation Department has decided to depend on foreign expertise to provide further treatment to the tusker since the injury was not healing despite treatment.

Dr Jayasinghe said a team of Veterinary Surgeons at the Peradeniya University had collected blood samples and specimens for laboratory tests.

He said the 10-foot-tall tusker was about 40 years old and that it had been frequenting Thuruwila, Thirappane and Mahakanadarawa areas in Anuradhapura for several years before it was injured. (B.G. Chaturanga)
