Vavuniya Prison operations return to normal

The Vavuniya Remand Prison, which had been closed for two weeks due to a contagious disease spreading among the detainees, will reopen tomorrow (07), the Prisons Department said.

According to Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake, the decision has been taken on the advice of the Regional Epidemiologist.

He said the temporary closure of the prisons was a precaution against the imminent spread of measles.

“Visitors to detainees had been restricted since July 25, on the instructions of the health authorities,” he said.

Accordingly, the restrictions will end today, and the prison will reopen tomorrow (08).

The Medical Officer of Health (MOH) has also taken immediate action to vaccinate all prisoners above 21 years with the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccines.

At present, Vavuniya prison houses 400 detainees and a staff of 85 officers.
