Empowering Lives: Ninewells’ Hearts of Joy Initiative Continues to Make a Difference

In its ongoing mission to uplift underprivileged women and children across Sri Lanka, Ninewells Hospital’s Hearts of Joy initiative continues to make a meaningful impact. Launched as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project, Hearts of Joy is dedicated to providing essential support to vulnerable communities, empowering them to overcome adversity and build sustainable livelihoods.

Since its inception, the Hearts of Joy Foundation has operated through funds provided by Ninewells Hospital and the generous contributions of well-wishers and benefactors. These resources have enabled the foundation to provide much-needed essentials such as clothing, food, educational materials, and minor infrastructure development for women, children, and families in need.

One of the cornerstone projects of Hearts of Joy has been its ongoing support for expecting mothers, women, and children at the Welikada Prison. The foundation regularly supplies them with vital necessities and educational resources, ensuring that they maintain dignity and well-being despite their challenging circumstances. The initiative also extends its efforts nationwide by distributing pre-loved toys collected at Ninewells Hospital to Regional Medical Officers of Health (MOHs), along with educational programs covering breastfeeding, women’s health, and child development.

In celebration of Children’s Day this year, Hearts of Joy took a significant step by collaborating with the Department of Probation and Childcare Services to uplift the Prajapathi Government Receiving Home. As part of this initiative, the foundation has been instrumental in renovating play areas, enhancing early childhood education, and providing free medical care for the children residing there. These efforts aim to create a nurturing environment where these children can thrive, despite the hardships they have faced.

“We remain deeply committed to making a long-lasting impact in the lives of the economically challenged and deserving members of our society,” said Dr. Thiasha Fernando, Deputy Managing Director at Ninewells Hospital. “Through the continued efforts of the Hearts of Joy Foundation, we aim to provide not only immediate relief but also lasting opportunities for women and children to build better futures.”

Looking ahead, the Hearts of Joy initiative is set to expand its outreach, with plans to support additional government receiving homes and broaden its impact throughout Sri Lanka.  Ninewells hopes to continue bringing hope and empowerment to those who need it most, one heart at a time.
