The Sri Lanka Railways Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union has decided to call off their ongoing trade union action following assurances by Railway Authority and Ministry officials, union secretary S.R.C.M. Senanayake said.
He told the Daily Mirror that a discussion was held with the Railways General Manager and Transport Ministry officials at the Ministry.
The officials decided to provide a solution within two weeks. Therefore, the union decided to call off the train strike.
The Railway Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union has been on strike since midnight on Monday (11) over several key demands, including amendments to the recruitment process and promotions.
Due to the strike, commuters were stranded as more than 128 train journeys were cancelled after the drivers withdrew from their duties.
However, the Railway Department had assigned 139 scheduled train services in the morning and evening yesterday for the convenience of commuters.
Meanwhile, letters have been issued to the 84 railway engine drivers who are on strike, and they have been requested to report for duty immediately. If they fail, they will be considered to have vacated their posts.
